Phalaenopsis, Cattleya, and dendrobium orchids are usually famous, but Clowesia is unfamiliar to the general public. However, if you search for Clowesia on places like Instagram, it seems that there are quite a few professionally raised farms and enthusiasts.
Because flowers are produced from the underside of the bulb, they are usually grown in hanging.
The genus Clowesia was first formally named by John Lindley in 1848, and was introduced into the genus Catasetum by Reichenbach in 1872. In fact, Clowesia looked like Catasetum, which in my opinion deserves it. However, in 1975 C.H. Dodson again classified clowesia as a separate genus.
Clowesia warscewiczii, one of the eight world-known original species, is known to be found in Ecuador and Venezuela in Central America, and is widely found at an altitude of 200 to 1500 meters above sea level. There are many different kinds of pretty Clowesia, but in Korea, it seems that three kinds are easily available: clowesia rosea, jumbo grace, and warscewiczii.
At first glance, it looks like it would be difficult to grow in Korea due to its unique appearance, but in reality it is said that it will survive unless it freezes in winter as it adapts well.
Unlike the appearance, clowesia is strong and can withstand hibernation even in the cold winter.
Unlike succulents, which rarely change except for flower season, I think it would be fun to grow them because their growth patterns were very different from season to season.
Late winter - spring
Clowesia wakes up from hibernation and blooms in spring. At this point, start watering.
When the flowers fade, the shoots begin to rise.
Spring - fall
It is a period of vigorous growth. It needs a lot of water because the shoots need to grow vigorously and make a thick bulb. Clowesia is known to like high air humidity and ventilation. Unlike Cattleya or Phalaenopsis orchid, Clowesia leaves are large, crumpled, and thin, giving them a vegetable-like feel. In a way, it resembles a leaf of a shrimp orchid.
Winter (after the bulb is complete)
All the leaves fall off, leaving only the bulb that has grown vigorously. From this point on, water is not given because it is the resting season. If the bulb becomes wrinkled, just spray lightly. It keeps them from freezing during winter hibernation.
Fertilizer
During the growing season, it grows vigorously, so it is good to fertilize it. It is said that various combinations of fertilizers or nitrogen-rich fertilizers are recommended.

Clowesia seems to be mostly potted. Perhaps it's because the flowers in pots are beautiful and easy to care for. Anyway, the point of planting in a pot is moisture management. Clowesia likes water, but it shouldn't be too wet, so when planting in clay pot, it is better to plant it with sphagnum moss, and when planting in a plastic pot, plant it in a bark to manage moisture.

Just as a beautiful rose has thorns, clowesia also has thorns in an unexpected location. Perhaps the leaves fall and make such thorns.
